As the T.v Show end, and we see the other five character move up in Maslows Hierarchy of need. The character, Joey Tribbiani is the only one who has not develped as a character. The way he starts the season is how he ends it.
We mainly see that Joey has a great tendency to be in and out of relationships, which can stem from his relationships with his own parents. Since he grew up in a big catholic family of 8, Joey never really got much attention. This shows that the need to ever emotional connect with someone was not as important. |
Joey seem unable to stay in a committed relationship due to the fact that he loves himself more than he may love others, besides his friends. This shows that According to Hans Eysenck, in reference to Stability v.s Instability and Introvert v.s Extrovert, Joey would fall under the stable side of the scale as he is usually very easy going in the group and never takes things too seriously. Joey also is an extrovert as he is always socializing and hanging out with his friends. He always goes across the hall to Monica’s and Rachel's apartment and has had many girlfriends showing his tendency to go up to girls and hit on them to start smooth conversations. Using Erikson's Psychosocial Stages of Development, we can say that Joey is stuck in stage 6: Intimacy v.s Isolation. Since Joey never got married like the rest of his friends, it shows that he failed to develop an solidifying intimacy with someone and move on in the stages of development. He started the show alone and he ended the show alone, while his other friends didn’t. |
